In your own words, how would you define the term “Norfology”?
Hearing ‘Norfology’ I automatically take an academic approach to the definition and meaning of the word. To me, Norfology means the study of Norfolk which is a way to learn more about the culture, offerings, neighborhood pockets, art scene, business landscape, etc. It’s a way to delve into what Norfolk is and could be.
And how would you define a “Norfologist”?
I would think a Norfologist is someone who has made Norfolk their stomping ground, knows what’s going on, takes advantage of the area, and is willing and able to share their experiences with others, encouraging them to also experience the Norfolk scene.
Describe the work that you do.
My husband and I are lucky enough to own and operate Green Alternatives, an earth-friendly retail store. Through the store we’re able to offer locals eco-forward options for personal care, household items, reusable needs, fair trade products, and outdoor items. Most recently, we’ve expanded by offering an eco lawn care and mowing service through Green Alternatives that stays true to our environmental stewardship efforts and beliefs.
What makes your business/organization unique in Norfolk and Hampton Roads?
Fortunately for us, being unique in Norfolk is easy as we’re one of very few stores in the area specializing in eco-friendly products and services. Right now, the green business landscape features a small handful of entrepreneurs who all seem to specialize in a different product or service.
Why did you choose Norfolk for your business?
Norfolk is home to us. We live in Norfolk, and it makes sense for us to build a business that is close to home. Norfolk is also the central metropolis of Hampton Roads and is an area that we know better than any other in the region.
What incentives, amenities, infrastructure, opportunities, etc does working in Norfolk offer your business?
We see the greatest benefit to being in Norfolk as the diverse group of residents residing in the city.
Since working in Norfolk, how have you seen your business grow?
Honestly, Norfolk has always been the home of Green Alternatives so we don’t have much to compare it to as far as growth due to city/locale. What I can say (which should be a testament to Norfolk) is that the original owners of Green Alternatives were Virginia Beach natives and choose Norfolk as their business site.
If you were speaking with a fellow entrepreneur who was looking to relocate their business, what would you tell them about your experiences in Norfolk to entice them to do business here?
For me, I’ve been fortunate enough with my business mission and goals to be able to partner with the City on eco activities and education.
What do you personally enjoy about living and working in Norfolk?
I love living and working in Norfolk because there is such a hugely diverse and eclectic group of people here.
What do you see in Norfolk’s future that excites you?
Knowing that my interests lie in environmental education, action, and stewardship, Norfolk’s future is looking greener, which is exciting. More and more city officials and departments are thinking about conservation and local-living, reducing, reusing, and recycling.
