The only way to not have a good time in Norfolk is to never leave your house… and to keep the shades closed all the time… and to stay hidden under the covers all the hours you’re not at work.
Yeah, it’s that easy to get out and have fun in Norfolk.
In Festevents Norfolk boasts one of the more ambitious and forward-thinking civic event marketing programs in the country. They attract more than two million people a year to their events, which include beer festivals, wine festivals, an African-American culture festival, July 4th fireworks, a jazz festival, outdoor movies in the summer, and a celebration of everything Norfolk called Harborfest.
Given that ten times as many people attend these events than live in the city, yeah, you could say that what Festevents does is pretty popular.
Part of the attraction is Festevent’s home, Town Point Park, seven-acres of green heaven on the banks of the Elizabeth River. With an outdoor concert venue, a marina, The National Maritime Center, and the towers of Downtown just a block away, Town Point Park is a world-class blend of nature, city, and culture that will draw you back again and again.
While Festevents provides the gaudy, post-card events that make Norfolk so electric, it’s the smaller, more grass-roots activities that build Norfolk’s sense of community… while also being a total blast.
The Ghent Bar Tours are sometimes a little too much fun, if you know what I mean. The event happens four times a year—you do not want to miss the annual Santa Crawl—and happen in Norfolk’s hippest neighborhood, Ghent.
You can also get your kicks in the Kickball League of Hampton Roads. What’s better than kicking the crap out of a bouncy red ball with some friends, and then heading to the bar for some cocktails on the outdoor deck? The league is co-ed, puts fun before winning, and is one of the great social centrifuges of Norfolk.
The kids on the street don’t call Norfolk “More Fun Olk” for nothing. Okay, nobody calls it that. But it’s really fun here, for these and about a thousand other reasons.
